USA: Minnesota is known for its fishing and farming, but who would think to raise saltwater seafood in our landlocked state?
The Northern Tide Farm is Minnesota's first and only saltwater shrimp farm. It has been selling shrimp outside Elgin since last May.
This year, the company sold out of its signature crustaceans, Pacific White shrimp, for Memorial Day weekend, according to its Facebook page.
Owner Chad Axley says he started it because he wanted to find a healthier, more sustainable way to produce food.
Axley and his wife, Laura, turned on old barn into on a site 15 miles east of Rochester into a shrimp barn, according to the company website.
The first batch of post larvae shrimp was brought in last January and ready to be sold by the summer. Northern Tide typically gets their shrimp when the critters are 30 days old. It raises them for about three months, until the seafood is 120 days old and ready to eat, according to its website.
